The National Park of the Metalliferous Hills

The Colline Metallifere Park covers an area of over 108,000 hectares, comprising the territory of seven municipalities: Monterotondo Marittimo, Montieri, Massa Marittima, Roccastrada, Gavorrano, Follonica and Scarlino.

There are 34 mining sites, 41 geosites, over 250 minerals and rocks surveyed, about 19 thousand hectares of protected areas dedicated to Biodiversity (Nature Reserves, Natura 2000 sites, biotopes, a Ramsar wetland), more than 130 sites of historical, archeological and landscape interest, hundreds of km of paths.

It has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it narrates the mining and metallurgical activities that have taken place in the Maremma for over three thousand years.

Inside of the Park, motor vehicles are prohibited: Park’s paths and mule tracks are reserved for hikers, MTBs and horses, in respect of the local fauna.
